Without You
Posted on

“Without You” is my first new release since 2021’s “So That’s How It Ended…”, available now on all streaming platforms, including:
It’s a pop ballad reminiscent of John Mayer (“Sob Rock” era) and Don Henley (“The End of the Innocence” era).
Music & Lyrics
Many of my songs “come to me” more-or-less fully formed, often while walking, sometimes even in my sleep. When this happens, I need to immediately capture the idea on a voice recorder before I forget it. This is exactly how “Without You” happened, and this is the voice memo I recorded on 12 January of this year, as the song came to me:
In that initial burst of inspiration, I had the groove, the basic chords, the verse and chorus melody, the harmonies, the words “Without You” – i.e. 90% of the composition – and a clear vision for the arrangement and production.
Fine-tuning the chords, adding a bridge (“middle eight”) and finalising the structure was all done within the next few days.
The lyrics were considerably harder: writing lyrics is a painful, laborious process for me, and I’m just not very good at it, which is why I prefer collaborating with lyricists. But I took a punt on this one and while it may not be a masterpiece of poetry and originality, it tells a somewhat coherent story and meshes well with the mood and melody of the song.
Arrangement & Production
I played and sang all the parts, mixed and mastered the track in my home studio.
The strumming acoustic guitar, drumbeat, and recurring electric guitar motif form the backbone of the track.
The vocal harmonies are the standout element. These, along with the subtle guitar lead and chord changes at the end of the song, are my favourite parts.
To me, the track has a very satisfying sound and a reflective, introspective mood. An ideal driving song!

Lyrics
Heading out on the highway
Dead-end sign coming my way
Thoughts of you that I can’t let go
It’s getting late, I need a break
Stop dwelling on my mistakes
I need to get off and let it go
Without you
Without you
Living without you
Caught a smile as you passed me by
You didn’t stop and I wonder why
So easy for you to let me go
Look for a sign that isn’t there
On this lonely road to nowhere
This empty feeling I’m letting go
Without you
Been driving on this road for much too long
But I have to find the will to carry on (Yeah, yeah)
Living without you
Without you
Without you
Living without you
Without you
Living without you
Without you
Artwork & Video
I have zero intention of using AI in my music and feel a bit dirty having used AI for the visuals… but what else was I going to do!?
I used Google’s Nano Banana 2 for the image and Kling 3.0 for the video.
I had a clear vision for the image, and I must admit the AI executed it very well… and made me look supercool!!! Do you like it?
